The only benchmark you can compare apples to apples is the Glbenchmark, and the Nexus 4 (Adreno 320) beats the iPhone 5 in the GPU tests that matter (see the egypt off-screen tests). I think that you're wrong when you say Android is power hungry. It also has a lot to do with the fact that screens on Android are way bigger than displays on an iPhone, and will consume more power than anything else. I own an iPhone 4s, and my Nexus 4 gets better battery life than the iPhone, despite it's 1.3" smaller screen (I just replaced the battery on the iPhone, btw. It's hard to determine the actual screen on time with an iPhone because there is no application like Battery Stats, or even a third party implementation like BetterBatteryStats.

This isn't a great comparison, but the Nexus 4 is also a lot smoother on than the iPhone 4s runing iOS 6, and navigating throughout the Android is a much better experience. Want to turn off WiFi? Or turn on Airplane mode. With Android there you can achieve both in two clicks, as apposed to five on iOS, and it's much more cumbersome. Want to share a file via Dropbox or Email? This can be done in a much more elegant manner than iOS, and that's a fact. I've done it numerous times.

You know what REALLY bothers me about iOS? Is how WiFi is literally turned off when the device turns off, and goes to sleep. I use VoIP calling and Google Voice for all of my calling/SMS. If I turn my iPhone screen off, my extension will get disconnected, and I won't receive any calls, or messages via GV. I'm using the device without cellular service because my Nexus 4 is a much more powerful device, and I actually have the option for WiFi to STAY on when the device goes to sleep. What really cracks me up is the fact that this option could EASILY be implemented into iOS, but Apple thinks that their users are so amazingly stupid that they don't bother doing it, and think that people will complain about battery life. If you search around, you'll notice that this still isn't an option on the latest version of iOS, which is just hilarious. I'm pretty sure this option was available in Eclair, or maybe even Donut.

Android may have been behind in the past, and i'll admit that, but after witnessing my Galaxy Nexus run very smoothly with 4.1+ on sub par hardware (the 4s was a lot faster than the Gnex), it's safe to say that times have changed. Take a look at any legacy device running Cyanogenmod, or any AOSP rom. Even the Galaxy S 2 runs 4.1+ ROMs smoothly.

Funny you should say that, when to me Sony and HTC devices are among the only ones that are appealing. I've never seen an iPhone where I thought "this is my next" and similarly, Samsung phones are just so ugly I don't even care what the internal specs are like, I just don't want it.

The only reason HTC don't do as well is because Samsung and Apple have made a name for themselves in multiple tech markets. HTC makes phones, and phones only. Their tablets will return when they find a way to innovate that market as well. But for now HTC are laying low until they can find a way to guarantee they can pull the market away from Apple and Samsung.

Nokia are on a downward slope. They just aren't in it any more. No innovation, just the same old stuff. The PureView 808 was an amazing concept, but it was their only good concept in a while and the fact that it was running Symbian is just a killer for it.

Sony are a little more complicated. I can't really pin why they do badly than the others because they make great phones, and apart from me, an HTC user, my entire family owns a Sony device. I'd say it's likely they're not focused on innovating in the mobile market, because they don't need to. They have the PS3 (PS4 later today), sound systems, TV, any market they're in it. They get income from everything else and only put out phones for the sake of market presence.
