That impression is in fact caused by the brighter display from the international version. They have the same pixel density, hence same sharpness. The problem here is contrast and viewing angle, which, as I dig deeper into the problem, turn out to be due to screen calibration. FYI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155145 Same hardware, though it's not OK when they let such a software-related difference affect overall performance. However, it's not as huge as the way everyone's looking at it. The huge problem is why Sony keeps holding on to TFT instead of IPS technology.

A proof that screen of international version of Xperia Z is not good quality. Even Japanese customer doesn't want it.
Added with HTC One release and upcoming SGS4, Xperia Z will be another Sony's failure.

XPERIA Z has TFT display :( oh my god why? FLAGSHIP must be #1! look at Huawei Ascend D2! it has RETINA display. look at iPhone 5! it has also RETINA display!

so i cant say only that: xperia z - it is RUBBISH! it's only advantage is just waterproof!
Xperia Z costs about 800 $ USD in europe. i'm not crazy to buy rubbish TFT display from SONY!
it's better to wait little bit more and buy Galaxy S 4!

Galaxy S4 will be #1! it has AMOLED display and will be more powerfull than Xperia Z!

Sony it is beautiful plastic rubbish mobile phone!
