What are you talking about? IrDA use infrared light.. try to set up a connection and have somebody to walk between the devices.. IrDA need a clear point of view or the connection will not work. It lost it's popularity in the late 90's - but because it was dirt cheap it continued to be included in many devices long after.
Bluetooth and WiFi use radio signals and they have replaced IrDA years ago.

With the introduction of NFC and Nokias implementation professional users will save a lot of time.
I already have:
a bluetooth printer
a bluetooth connection on my phone
a bluetooth laptop
a bluetooth on my stationary PC
a bluetooth handsfree headset
a GPS with bluetooth
and a pair of bluetooth speakers..
You get the picture..

With the use of NFC I'm going to be able to connect much quicker and easier.
No need for pin codes or search for bluetooth devices.

Now I get in my car, and I connect my GPS, my phone, my laptop and my stereo in some kind of a pico net. NFC would have been SO much quicker.

And think of all the other options they are working on - with the ability to pay for tickets and at wending machines and in stores in general. There will come NFC IDs that will replace all the costumer/benefit cards. No need for your airline membership card, just tap the phone at a NFC reader and your bonus is included at once.

But it remains to be seen how many people that is ready for anything more advanced then they are used to, or another OS for that sake. I've tested the N9 on a trade show, and I'm very impressed with it. It will most likely be my next phone. Depending on how long my current phone works. I have an app that records how much of the time I use my phone actively. I'm at about 95% at the moment. Running a torrent client all night, use is as an alarm clock in the morning, followed by web radio when I'm in the shower - and at the same time I'm downloading podcasts. When I eat breakfast I connect my phone to the TV where I watch the news and other podcasts I've downloaded. On my way to work I listen to music or audio books I've downloaded. At work I use the phone as a phone (go figure), for SMS and once in a while MMS.. I have a lot of PDF documentation I use for work on the phone. I also use the phone for presentations .. I just connect it to a projector and I'm ready to go. I use it for mail and for general surfing. I also connect it to the TVs in the gym. Then I listen to more audio books, and then I go home. I use the phone, directly connected to the TV or via the Western Digital media center as a USB storage device. I use it as a hot spot sometimes too.
I find it hard to believe that my phone will last much longer then another year. I would like the new N950 as a replacement for my N900 - but I like the N9 better.. so far.
I love a phone with a keyboard and a open OS like Maemo. As long as the MeeGo does the same job, I'm going to see how long my N900 last. The quality seems to be very good, which is good since my economy is lousy at the moment.

But I'm tempted when I see the new N9 anyway. No matter what happens I hope all other phone makes see what NFC can do, and keep inventing new ways of doing it. I don't like companies like Apple and others that use patents to prevent others to continue to further develop new technology.

If this is what NFC can do then I seriously think we've stepped back in time! A normal Bluetooth pairing can get the job done and you know what's the best part? You don't even need to touch someone else's filthy device!

So instead of sending a file wireless via bluetooth across the room I will have to actually stand up, walk over there, touch my phone with the other phone in order to send a file over NFC?
Personally i am a old old Nokia user and fan, but i think its too bad that a great company have to join microsoft after so many years the meego system could be a real great os but with not real support its gonna be real difficult and no new version of meego should come even if the n9 would be a mass successor. Nokia its sooooooo user friendly but i have to say there where falling a sleep after recieving soooo much money from all the customer they didnt brang out new technology too fast they got beatten down by apple but after the first iphone i was thinking hey guys its time to wake up but you all know the answer i personally think the jointventure with microsoft is a strategic wise move in the one hand but on the other hand its like closing inofficially the nokiabrand that is also one of the reasons why the stock is going down daily. Defently the designer or developpers or the leading fell into a deep wintersleep. If it would be a mass succes the n9 i would go further with it but they cant becouse all the agreements with microsoft
I can understand nokia but i am disapointed
