On the move – Microsoft logo replaces Nokia logo

It’s been a long time coming but the acquisition of Nokia by Microsoft was expected and was finalized today. And Microsoft isn’t wasting any time with publicly showing the change.

Images from Harri Kiljander (Director of F-Secure Lokki) show what appears to be Nokia House in Finland with a crane truck up front, preparing to take down Nokia’s logo and another photo showing the S and F from Microsoft’s logo, reportedly being prepared for mounting. The “On The Move” sign under the Nokia logo adds an air of irony to the otherwise saddening image. Read more »

Microsoft outs Remote Desktop Preview app for Windows Phone 8.1

Microsoft released a Remote Desktop Preview app for Windows Phone 8.1. If you are among the many early adopters of the new OS, you can head to the Windows Phone Marketplace (where the app enjoys quite a few good reviews already) and try it out.

AdDuplex: Windows Phone 8.1 runs on 3.1% of all WP devices after three days of availability

It appears that Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1 is hotter beyond anyone’s expectations. Only three days after going live, the developer version of the newly-launched OS runs on 3.1% of all WP devices.

Windows Phone 8.1 benchmarks

We already said in our Windows Phone 8.1 review that the OS feels smoother than its predecessor, but is it really? Well we’ve decided to run some benchmark tests and see how the new OS performs under pressure. Microsoft has done quite a few optimizations for sure, so we are eager to see how the update is handled by different phones.

We had three Lumia phones around for our tests – Lumia 720, Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520. We rаn each benchmark on Windows Phone 8 with GDR3 and Nokia Black updates, and then we’ve updated all three devices to the latest Windows Phone 8.1 Developer’s Preview. Read more »

Nokia Lumia 630 gets a cool video promo full of football trick shots

In the days between the official announcement and the market release of one of their smartphones, each manufacturer is trying to build up hype about it and promo videos are a commonly used tool for that. In the case of the Lumia 630, Nokia has hired Finnish goalkeeper and trick shot master Lassi Hurskainen to produce what is certainly one of the coolest promo clips we’ve seen in a while.

Using the help of an assistant, Hurskainen makes some pretty sweet shots to knock several people’s handsets out of their hands. It’s unclear if the phones take any damage, but everyone involved gets a free Lumia 630 and they all seem pretty happy about it. Read more »

Nokia Lumia 1520 might get Miracast support, older WP devices have no chance

Microsoft introduced its latest mobile operating system, Windows Phone 8.1 a few days ago. Back at its announcement, the Redmond giant did mention that the newest OS supports Miracast, but we now know that the wireless screen casting service would require new hardware to work and will not be available on all WP 8.1 devices.

According to a tweet from Joe Belfiore, the head of Windows Phone group, Miracast would require new hardware and Nokia Lumia 1520 might be the only device to qualify. Read more »

You can use Cortana outside the US by just changing your region settings

Microsoft revealed its newest operating system – Windows Phone 8.1 at its BUILD conference in San Francisco. One of the most talked about features of the WP 8.1 is its virtual personal assistant, dubbed Cortana.

During the announcement of WP 8.1 OS, Joe Belfiore confirmed that Cortana will be available in the US at first with the UK and China following up next. However, tech enthusiasts have found a way to use the service, regardless of where you roll. Read more »

Windows goes free for devices with under 9-inch displays

Among a bevy of announcements, Microsoft had another announcement to make regarding the cost of Windows Phone and Windows to OEMs who’d want to license it for their devices.

According to the announcement, Windows and Windows Phone will now be available for free to manufacturers for use on devices with displays smaller than 9-inches. This includes all smartphones and small tablets with 8-inch displays. Read more »
