ASUS waves goodbye to the Windows RT platform due to poor sales

Poor sales performance of the Windows RT platform, which Microsoft hoped would making a dent in the tablet market, has made ASUS announce it’s ceasing making slates running it.

New Nexus 7 arriving in UK on August 28

ASUS has announced that the European version of the second generation Nexus 7 tablet will go on sale in the UK on August 28. Although the tablet was announced couple of weeks ago and went on sale in the US last week, the European launch dates weren’t revealed until now.

In terms of pricing, the 16GB Wi-Fi-only model will cost £199.99 and the 32GB variant will be priced at £239.99 and will be available through multiple retailers along with the Play Store. Read more »

IDC: Apple tablet share in Q2 falls to 32% as Android sales explode

Market analysts IDC has released its report on tablet shipment numbers for the second quarter of this year. Although Apple retains top tablet spot and shipped more tablets than Samsung, ASUS, Lenovo and Acer combined it controls only 32% market share of the entire quarter.

Compared to Q2 of 2012 when Apple saw 60.3% market share of tablet shipments it saw a 14.1% drop in shipments year over year. Samsung saw an increase of 277%, Lenovo had its sales explode by 313.9% and ASUS extended its shipments by 120.3% with Apple the only one seeing a negative trend. Read more »

11 new devices now have CyanogenMod support, get in line for Android 4.3

The CyanogenMod team nonchalantly added a total of 11 new devices to the CyanogenMod 10.1 whitelist. The latest batch of devices to support the most popular custom ROM out there have also entered testing phase for the next version of CyanogenMod ROM, 10.2, which is based on Android 4.3.

As for the devices, the majority of them are Motorolas and include the Motorola Atrix HD (mb886), Motorola Photon Q GSM (xt897) and CDMA (xt897c), Motorola Droid Razr M (xt907), Motorola Razr HD GSM (xt925) and the Motorola Droid Razr HD CDMA (xt926). Read more »

Sony Xperia Tablet Z gets Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, refreshed UI

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z SGP321, which is the European LTE version, has started receiving its Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 update from Sony. The update brings centered soft buttons, a notification area on top instead of at the bottom and with quick settings in it.

Microsoft drops Surface Pro price by $100

Google launches Android Device Manager, lets you locate your misplaced droid

Google is about to launch its own service that lets you locate your misplaced Android device or protect your data and privacy in case it gets stolen. The service is dubbed Android Device Manager and will let you ring your phone at maximum volume so you can locate it, even if silent mode has been enabled.

We saw the leaked back panel of the Apple iPad 4 a while ago and now, the aluminum body of the upcoming iPad Mini successor has been spotted. Unsurprisingly, the back housing of the iPad Mini 2 does not suggest any major changes in the design and it looks like Apple is going to stick with the proven formula for its second-gen compact tablet.

Canalys: Small tablets help Android to tablet market dominance

Following the research of Strategy Analytics from a couple of days ago now comes a report from Canalys who confirms Android’s lead in the tablet market.

Samsung, Amazon, Lenovo and Acer combined have sold nearly 12 million tablets. Add to that number the smaller companies and the white-box tablet manufacturers, and the overall Android tablets sold for the quarter reached 19.5 million units. Read more »

Apple iPad 5 back casing leaks, confirms iPad mini like design

A leaked prototype of the upcoming iPad 5 from Apple had suggested that the slate would sport an iPad Mini-like design. Now, the aluminum back housing of the fifth-generation iPad has surfaced and confirms that the device would indeed resemble the iPad Mini.

This means that the Apple iPad 5 will come out with a much thinner side bezel, making the device more compact. The Cupertino giant has also managed to reduce the width of its fifth-gen iPad and the upcoming tablet reportedly measures 168mm – which is about 0.7 inches narrower than the iPad 4, which stands at 185.7mm.
