An Apple iPad Air catches fire in Australian Vodafone store

A Vodafone retail store in Canberra had to be evacuated on Wednesday because an iPad Air burst into flames.

The fire allegedly started at the charging port, set the whole iPad on fire and proceeded to fill the entire store with smoke. Read more »

Apple allegedly in talks with Samsung to fix burn-in issues on Retina iPad mini

Starting last month, industry insiders close to Apple’s supply chain reported on potential supply issues Apple could face regarding production of its Retina iPad Mini display panels.

The latest report out of Korea indicates that burn-in problems with the LCD panels will result in Apple delaying its launch of the new iPad mini, and could cause Apple to reopen negotiations with Samsung in order to help complete the order of some 15 million panels. Read more »

Apple iPad Air is cheaper to build than iPad 3

The Apple iPad Air is a major redesign of Apple’s 9.7″ tablet and is unquestionably more advanced than all their previous models. But did it cost Apple more to make? AllThingsD and researchers from IHS report that the Air is cheaper than the iPad 3 (the last big iPad they have examined), despite the cost of the display going up.

It’s really the screen that is the biggest change to the internals. A new design has allowed Apple to use just one layer of glass instead of two, which has reduced the thickness from 2.23mm to 1.8mm. Read more »

Archos announces 101 XS 2 Android tablet

Archos has launched a new large Android tablet, the 101 XS 2. It has a 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 resolution IPS display and Archos Coverboard keyboard that snaps magnetically to the tablet and acts as a cover, keyboard and a kickstand.

On the inside is a quad-core Cortex A9 CPU clocked at 1.6GHz and Mali 400 MP4 GPU, 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage space with microSD card. The tablet has 2 megapixel cameras on the front and back. It runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Read more »

Verizon Ellipsis 7 with quad-core processor goes official

After appearing in rumorland, the Verizon Ellipsis is now official. Verizon’s first tablet is 4G LTE enabled and will rub its shoulders against the likes of Google nexus 7.

While many were awaiting the iPad mini with Retina display, Apple was busy running the larger iPad through the treadmill so that when the unveiling came, it won’t fall into the shadow of its smaller sibling.

Google disables translucency effects on Nexus 10 under KitKat

One of the key UI changes in the new Android 4.4 KitKat is the presence of the Moto X style translucent navigation and notification bars on the homescreen that allows the wallpaper to shine through. Turns out though, it’s not something everyone will be getting, even if you have a Nexus device.

In a rather Apple-esque move, Google has decided to disable the translucency effect on the Nexus 10 tablet, citing performance issues. The Android source code for the tablet states quite clearly ‘Translucent status & navigation bars perform poorly on this device’ and the value of the effect is set to ‘False’. Read more »

CyanogenMod 10.2 M1 brings Android 4.3 to over 70 devices

The latest numbers from Google show that manufacturers are still having a hard time delivering Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to their smartphones. Good thing the guys from the CyanogenMod team are here to help those in need.

The developers have published the M1 release of CyanogenMod 10.2, which is based on Android 4.3 and supports over 70 different devices. M1 stands for Milestone version, which slots between the stable ROMs and the betas that the team releases. Read more »

Apple, Best Buy will price match iPad Air to $480 in brick and mortar stores

The new Apple iPad Air was going to cost $500, but Walmart decided to knock $20 off. Apple itself along with Best Buy will be price matching the offer so a 16GB iPad Air will cost $480 at launch (which is today).

9to5mac cautions that this deal (unlike Walmart’s) is valid only in stores – the online sites of Apple and Best Buy list the full $500 price. Read more »
