Google Voice now available as native iPhone app, supports push notifications

by 3 comments

Justice is finally served and Google Voice is available at the App Store. Apple, with their “no duplication of native functionality” rule, kept the app out of iPhone-land for a pretty long time, but they finally let it in.

And as was to be expected the native app works way better than the than the HTML5 web app clever Google used to sidestepped this App Store rule so far. Read more »

BlackBerry Playbook trashes the Apple iPad at browsing, the video’s inside

by 482 comments

Okay this video comes from RIM’s own YouTube channel so you should probably take it with a bucket of salt but it’s worth checking out nonetheless. Here’s how it goes: the RIM upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and the insanely successful Apple iPad are placed side by side on a table and are then made to load several pages simultaneously.

The result is there for you to see – the PlayBook swim laps around the iPad and that’s discounting the fact that the Apple tablet lacks Flash. Read more »

Facebook announces Messages, promises to change the way we text forever

by 656 comments

Today Facebook went live with its Messages service that promises to gather all your correspondence together. That includes email, Facebook messages, SMS and even some other IM clients. Sound like a real time-saver if you are using all those services.

While you are indeed getting a @facebook.com email address, Facebook Messages actually doesn’t quite try to replace your regular email provider. It lacks features like CC and BCC fields and groups all your correspondence with one person in one huge thread. Read more »

Windows Phone 7 kills memory cards on the Samsung Focus

by 21 comments

As you may know Samsung Focus is the only Windows Phone 7-powered phone that officially supports user-exchangeable microSD cards. It’s the exception of the Microsoft’s basic requirements, which strictly forbid any kind of expandable storage.

It seems Microsoft did this for a reason, because the microSD slot on the Samsung Focus may become its big disadvantage instead of a key selling factor.

FaceIt-3GS app enables Face Time on iPhone 3GS, no video call camera is a problem (duh!)

by 15 comments

Apple is trying to rekindle the interest in video calling with Face Time – but it’s only for iPhone 4 and Mac users and only over Wi-Fi. Devs are already tearing down those restrictions – a new app called FaceIt-3GS enables Face Time on the, you guessed it, iPhone 3GS…

by 14 comments

The fact that a large portion of the Android apps don’t use the whole available screen estate is probably the main issue of the Galaxy Tab software. The great news is that a helpful hacker has just found an easy tweak that allows you to get fix that.

All that’s required is to download the free Spare Parts app from the Andriod Market and follow the instructions from the video below. Read more »

Turns out Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is capable of multi-touch after all, I wonder why SE doesn’t use it

by 37 comments

According to Sony Ericsson its crown jewel XPERIA X10 doesn’t sport the hardware needed for performing multi-touch gestures on the XPERIA X10. That’s why there’s no sign of pinch zooming in the Android 2.1 Eclair update despite that the smartphone has a nice capacitive screen.

Fortunately, some developers over at XDA didn’t buy that story and went on a quest for enabling multi-touch support on the Sony Ericsson flagship. And frankly, they’ve succeeded.

Skyfire brings Flash videos to the iPhone, finds its servers incapable of handling the pressure

by 479 comments

Yet another 3rd party web browser stormed the App Store yesterday. SkyFire 2.0 was made available yesterday, allowing iPhone users to enjoy Flash-videos without a jailbreak for the first time.

Of course it’s not quite the real thing, but it’s about infinite times better than what the native Safari offers in this aspect. The magic is done by the Skyfire servers that automatically convert embedded Flash videos to HTML5 before streaming it to the iPhone. Read more »

8pen promises to change touch-based text input for good

by 196 comments

With all current touch text input methods based on the good old QWERTY keyboards you might have some serious trouble typing quickly and accurately if you have larger fingers (or a smaller display) to work with. Enter the 8pen – the input alternative that tries to make all touch-users equal, regardless of their thumb size.

Available in the Android Market since last night, 8pen arranges all the characters around four diagonal lines on your display and uses circular gestures for typing. There required accuracy is thus reduced to a quarter of the typing area, which is basically impossible to miss. Read more »
