Intel has a Haswell chip with 4.5W SDP, might be getting ready to challenge ARM’s tablet dominance

by 45 comments

Intel has been gunning after ARM in the mobile space for a while now and the chip giant may have an ace up its sleeve – a Y-series Haswell processor with SDP of only 4.5W. This should be low-enough to go into relatively small and light tablets as it’s close to the power draw of ARM chipsets.

The chip features a dual-core processor that comes in two versions – 6.5W SDP and 4.5W SDP, both having the same TDP, 11.5W. In case you’ve missed the new terminology, TDP is the maximum power draw (CPU and GPU at full throttle), while SDP is a target for “regular” usage. Read more »

New 13.3″ MacBook Air torn down, small changes and no room for upgrades found inside

by 10 comments

This Monday Apple announced the new MacBook Air and two short days later it has already been torn down by the iFixit team. What they found was that the new 13″ model is almost identical to the old one. even the model number was the same, which might make things confusing and the only external difference is the new microphone grill. Apple has added a second microphone on the new Air.

Things on the inside looked pretty similar, but with newer components obviously. The big bump in battery life comes from Mac OS X Mavericks enhancements, Intel’s new Haswell CPU and a slightly bigger battery – 7.6V and 7,150mAh (up from 7.3V, 6,700mAh). Read more »

These have faster built-in graphics and have highly touted power-sipping features allowing for much longer battery life for mobile products. Quite frankly, when Google took the wraps off the $1,299 Chromebook Pixel, just about everyone got caught by surprise. Of course, the Pixel does have some chops to show for its price tag. Leading the way is a stunningly gorgeous body, machined from anodized aluminum. Once you crack the notebook open, a jaw-dropping 12.85” touchscreen with a resolution of 2560 x 1700 pixels greets you.

Late as we are, we got our chance to try out a review unit and we didn’t waste any time but whipped up our own mini review. For starters, read on to see the full list of talents which this Chromebook OS royalty has to offer. Read more »
