Google Play Store boasts more downloads than the Apple App Store, but not as much revenue

AppAnnie is a mobile application statistics aggregation company and it has published a report on how Android and iOS apps have been doing in Q2 of this year. Both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store did great for the quarter, besting their results in Q1 by 60% and 45%, respectively.

That gave the Google Play Store, nearly 50% more downloads compared to the iOS App Store. It terms of revenue, however, it’s the Apple repository that still comes ahead. Read more »

Apple expands availability of 2-step verification to 59 countries

Apple has greatly expanded the availability of its 2-step verification process for Apple IDs. While it was only available in 11 countries previously, the feature is now available in 59 countries worldwide.

For those not aware, 2-step verification or authentication puts an extra step between entering your ID and password and logging in. It sends a verification message with a code to a preset device or number and only upon entering that code will the person be allowed to log in. This way, even if someone gets access to your password, they still can’t access your account unless they have access to the special code. Read more »

Facebook launches Mentions app for verified users

Facebook has launched a new application exclusive to those with a verified account. Called Mentions, it helps all those celebrities on Twitter to keep track of all the replies they receive.

Snapchat introduces geofilters

Snapchat has added a new filter setting in the app called geofilters.

Now when you take a picture, just slide right and you will see a bunch of text filters that correspond to your location. You’ll only see filters for your location and it’s mostly just colorful text in fancy fonts and some images overlaid on your photos. If that’s something you’re into, then you have that option now.
