IDC: Google Chromebooks preferred over Apple iPads in schools

According to the latest IDC Q3 report regarding bulk tech purchases for education needs, Google Chromebooks are now preferred by the majority of schools than Apple iPads. While the lead of Chromebooks in the education sphere isn’t jaw dropping, it’s a sign that many schools prefer the cheaper, yet functional Chromebook alternative.

Chromebooks lead the way with 715,500 units, whereas the iPads have slipped to 702,000. The laptops running Chrome OS sell as low as $199 and are made by a range of manufacturers including Samsung, HP, Dell and Acer. Read more »

Best Buy unveiled its planned price cuts for Black Friday, but apparently it couldn’t wait until midnight and Apple products are already discounted – and some devices already running out.

Dropbox integration with Microsoft Office now live in mobile apps

Earlier this month, Dropbox and Microsoft announced a broad partnership that would see the two companies’ mobile apps working together – allowing you to edit Office files from the Dropbox app and access your Dropbox from Office. This integration is now live.

The latest version of the Dropbox app for iOS and Android lets you open any Office document, spreadsheet, or presentation. And the new Edit icon (seen in the image above) lets you start editing stuff in the latest Office apps. Read more »

Apple App Store boasts record app downloads in October

Mobile marketing company Fiksu is traditionally reporting on Apple’s App Store Competitive Index, which also shows the number of free app downloads. For October, that number is a record high 7.8 million per day. The data is measured based on the top 200 free iOS apps.

Fiksu points out October’s result is 42% higher than the one from September, when the App Store saw just over 5.5 million free app downloads per day. Read more »

Monument Valley ‘Forgotten Shores’ update now available on Android

One of the best games to have come out this year recently got a major update in the form of eight additional levels that could be purchased for just $2 more dollars within the app. However, the Forgotten Shores update for Monument Valley was only available on iOS, until now.

If you have purchased the game, you will get the update that downloads the additional levels. If you are not interested in the additional levels there is no point downloading the update because it downloads the additional levels that only unlock after you make the payment. However if you played the original game and enjoyed it the additional levels are highly recommended. Read more »

The latest iPhone 6 ads showcase its gaming chops and Continuity with OS X Yosemite

Apple released a duo of brand new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus ads in time for the holiday shopping season. Once again, the Cupertino giant’s marketing efforts feature the voices of Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake.

‘Crossy Road’ for iOS game review

Crossy Road is a new ‘endless arcade hopper’ from developer Hipster Whale. The game is based on the 8-bit arcade game Frogger but instead of ending on the other side of the screen Crossy Road is infinitely long.

The game basically involves crossing busy streets and avoiding being run over by the vehicles, or jumping into the water. The further you go without dying, the higher the score. The game has proven to be exceptionally addictive and it was hard to put it down to write this, so let’s get on with it. Read more »

Microsoft takes another swing at Apple in a Siri vs. Cortana ad

After repeatedly bashing the MacBook Air in its Surface 3 commercials, Microsoft released yet another ad that takes a swing at Apple. The holiday themed video puts Nokia Lumia 830 side by side with Apple iPhone 6 Plus in a battle of virtual assistants.

Customize your Adidas sneakers with the miZX FLUX app for iOS and Android

The Adidas MiZX FLUX service allows you to create custom sneaker design and having it shipped to you. Now, the company has made it even easier to do so with its dedicated MiZX FLUX app for Android and iOS.

You just snap a photo of whatever you like to get printed, after selecting your gender, country and shoe size and then scale and adjust the photo to the shoe template. Then, you place an order, but it doesn’t come cheap. Read more »

Pebble gets an update and now supports notifications in 80 languages

The Pebble smartwatch has been treated with a firmware update, which allows its e-paper display to show notifications in many more languages as now there’s full character support. The Android app also got a new version which allows any app to beam notifications to the Pebble.

Apart from the support for showing notifications in 80 languages, the Pebble can now end ongoing calls, which is definitely useful. General performance and reliability should also be enhanced. Read more »

Fleksy keyboard breaks its own world record for the fast texting, price drop ensues

A Fleksy keyboard user has broken his own Guinness World Record for the fastest typing on a mobile device. Marcel Fernandes Filho, who had a previous record of speed-texting at 18.19 seconds, has set a new record of 17.00 seconds.

The Brazilian teenager used an iPhone 6 Plus with a Fleksy touchscreen keyboard to type the phrase “The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.” Read more »

Benchmarks show some iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units have slower storage

Flash storage for mobile devices is typically described by just its capacity, but if you’ve looked at a computer SSD you may have noticed initialisms like MLC and TLC. TLC is cheaper per gigabyte since it stores three bits per cell compared to the two of MLC, so Apple used TLC storage for some 64GB and 128GB iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units.

And it’s been nothing but headaches. First the controller in the TLC storage went haywire causing crashes, boot loops and slow speeds, now benchmarks have surfaced showing that MLC easily outperforms TLC. Read more »
