Google redesigns the Google Search app for iPad, makes it not suck for once

by 21 comments

Google’s apps for iOS so far have ranged from mediocre to downright lame. A lot of them were just the mobile versions of their mobile site with a slight redesign to fool the users into thinking they are using a proper app and not just a mobile site. But their latest Google Search app changes all that.

The redesign makes the app look completely different and unlike most of their other iOS apps, completely awesome. The best part about it is that it finally feels like a proper app and not just another tab in Safari. Read more »

HTC loses S3 patents leverage, as ITC clears Apple of patent infringing

by 35 comments

Apple has scored a point in their ongoing court match against HTC. The US International Trade Commission has ruled that the Cupertino-based company doesn’t infringe any of the HTC-owned patents.

Earlier, ITC declared that Apple was, in fact, violating some of the patents that HTC acquired with its purchase of S3 Graphics. However, it was OS X, rather than iOS, which was found in the wrong and Apple has obviously done enough to fix that. Read more »

Apple iPhone 4S becomes the second most popular cameraphone on Flickr, sets its sight on the iPhone 4

by 83 comments

The iPhone 4S has just become the second most popular cameraphone among Flickr users. Hardly a shocker, we can imagine as its predecessor is still the most popular camera on Flickr and that the 4S is miles ahead of it in terms of photo capabilities.

It only took just over a month for the iPhone 4S to go that far, so we can imagine it will be overtaking the iPhone 4 in no time. The iPhone 4S, which we found to be the most capable 8MP smartphone currently around, already has almost half the user base of the iPhone 4, so it’s probably just a Christmas shopping spree away from overtaking it. Apple made such a big deal of the iPhone 4S voice assistant, Siri that it was bound to attract the hacker’s attention. And, sure enough, the protocol of the service was cracked open we have most of the Siri mysteries revealed.

iOS 5 word suggestion pops out of registry hack, no jailbreak required

by 28 comments

iOS 5 has been around for some time now, in beta form, but now that it’s official hackers are hard at work revealing its secrets to the eager public. This time it’s an automatic native word suggesting feature, which displays words above the keyboard while you’re typing. The “Go” has been replaced by “Confirm” so that you can confirm the selected word suggestion and move on with your typing.

The feature can be enabled fairly easy and doesn’t require a jailbreak, which is welcome news for many non-jailbreak enthusiasts. It’s reportedly been tested on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 but should become available to all iOS 5-certified phones. Read more »

Developer demonstrates security flaw in iOS with an app, gets kicked from the developer program

by 38 comments

Yesterday, Charlie Miller released a video about an app that exploited a flaw in Apple’s code-signing on iOS devices, that allowed his app to run malicious code to run on an iOS device. The app was actually submitted to Apple under the guise of a stock market app and managed to get through their vetting process.

When Apple learned of the real purpose of this app, they immediately pulled it from the App Store and later also removed Miller from the iOS developer program. Can’t say this was unexpected as Miller clearly violated Apple’s policies. Read more »
