Untethered jailbreak for the new iPad is on the way

by 6 comments

Stefen Esser a.k.a. i0n1c needed less than a day to do untethered jailbreak on the new iPad. Quite expectedly, the new Apple tablet was jailbroken a few hours after release, but this is the first working untethered solution.

Here is the video proof: Read more »

Demystifying the new iPad name

by 96 comments

The new iPad launch event was more or less what everyone expected. The air was so thick with rumors before the launch that almost nothing that was announced managed to surprise anyone. Except that one thing that no one saw coming, and that was a new name. Almost everyone and his dog was betting on the new iPad being called the iPad 3 and as such a lot of people were actually disappointed that it wasn’t called that (never mind the fact that it makes absolutely no different to the product at all).

Even here at GSMArena were were quite baffled initially as to why Apple would choose to name their third generation product same as the first one and, at least as far as the name is concerned, place it behind the second generation model. But after a little bit of pondering, a few explanations started to come to my mind. Read more »

Buying an iPad? Check out its most honest review yet first

by 61 comments

If you are reading this standing in line in front of the Apple Store in your country of residence it’s probably too late, but if you have decided to wait a few days and see if the new iPad is worth your hard-earned cash by all means see this first. It’s the first truly honest review of the Apple latest slate.

Okay, we might have oversold it a bit. What we actually have here is a pretty funny video that’s hardly worth much in terms of consumer advice, but is certainly worth checking out. Read more »

Retina resolution iPad apps start populating the App Store

by 25 comments

It’s been just a week since Apple announced the new iPad and already we are seeing a decent number of apps optimized for the Retina resolution. In fact, Apple has even created a new category within iTunes that highlight these new apps optimized for the new iPad.

Now these aren’t new apps but just ones that have been spruced up to run at a higher resolution. In some cases, such as the Kindle App, it was basically making the text look sharper and in cases of 3D games like Infinity Blade II, the developers would have had to go through a lot more trouble to pour in enough detail to make the game look good enough at that resolution. FaceTime won’t work even on new iPad’s fast LTE connection

by 62 comments

FaceTime caused a lot of “oohs” and “aahs” but there are still problems with it – like needing a Wi-Fi connection for it to work. Even if you have blazing fast LTE connection on your shiny new iPad, you still can’t do a FaceTime call.

It has already been pointed out that using the iPad as a Wi-Fi hotspot and connecting an iPhone 4/4S to it to do a FaceTime is one way to get around this restriction, but that’s hardly an ideal solution and it certainly won’t work for everyone. Read more »

Sparrow lands on iOS

by 17 comments

The highly anticipated iOS version of the popular Mac email client Sparrow has finally arrived. Sparrow is now available for download on the App Store and costs $2.99.

The reason everyone was waiting for this app is because anyone who has used the built-in Mail app on iOS can tell you that it is quite mediocre. Although Apple has spruced it up a few times over the years it still lags far behind the official Gmail app on Android or the email app in Windows Phone. Read more »

Tesco website glitch prices the new iPad at just £50

by 6 comments

A trip to the supermarket can be filled with special offers like “buy one get one free” or “two for the price of one”, but how about an iPad for just £50.

Tesco Value iPad, apparently not

What some may see as the sale of the century, supermarket retailer Tesco see as a technical blunder on their part. Due to a glitch on the chain’s website, thousands of customers were fooled into thinking that a new 64GB WiFi/4G iPad was available to purchase for just £49.99. Read more »

Kindle Fire steals some market share, but iPad is still king of tablets in Q4, IDC reports

by 18 comments

The analysts from IDC just published their report on the global tablet market in the last quarter of last year and it appears that the picture was pretty much what we saw throughout 2011. Android is improving rapidly, but Apple’s iOS is still the king of the hill, accounting for more than half of all sales.

Apple managed to ship 15.4 million units in Q4 of last year, which secured them a market share of 54.7% (down from 61.5% in Q3). The best performer of the quarter was obviously the Amazon Kindle Fire, which got a share of 16.8% even though it was only on sale for a month and a half. Read more »

Apple could rack up an $11 billion bill with Samsung before 2012 is out

by 71 comments

With all the market rivalry, patent lawsuits and sly televisual marketing going on between Samsung and Apple, you’d be forgiven for thinking all ties between these two companies would have already been severed at this heavily tumultuous stage in their relationship, but at the end of the day business is business and both these big names know that need to work together to make money.

Apple will owe Samsung a lot of money before the end of 2012

The likes of LG and Sharp were initially entrusted with creating displays for Apple’s newest tablet, set to touch down in a couple of days, but when they were unable to deliver due to manufacturing issues, Apple passed the task to Samsung who will now be producing the new iPad’s QXGA display panels (for the time being at least). iPad unboxed early, benchmarked too

by 112 comments

The third generation Apple iPad will officially ship out to customers in three days time but a lucky Vietnamese site has caught an early look at the device and have an unboxing video prepped.

For those wondering if this is a fake Tinhte have also provided pictures of the device and show the LTE on/off toggle in the menu of the iPad and performed a Geekbench benchmark on it, which reveals the processor and RAM information. Read more »

Japanese isn’t Siri’s strongest language

by 30 comments

Japanese isn’t an easy language to learn and with the latest update to the iOS, Apple has tried to do just that. However, a Japanese iPhone user proves that Siri has needed a wee bit more time to study by pitching it against DoCoMo’s Syabette Concier.

For those of you who are unaware of Syabette Concier, it is what Siri is for Apple – DoCoMo’s developed personal assistant. So, let’s see how they get on when they face some Japanese phrases.

iPad Mini rumors refuse to go away, promise smaller bezel and lower price this time

by 42 comments

This rumor is proving harder to kill than most fictional characters – I’m talking about the iPad Mini rumor. It reappeared again, just days after Apple’s official announcement of the new iPad when Apple’s exec made no mentions of any such thing.

The diminutive iPad is said to have a small bezel so that it can be about the same size as 7″ Android tablets (Kindle Fire, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, etc.), while having a slightly larger screen diagonal – 7.85″ according to chitchat. Read more »
