Nikon announces the D3300 DSLR and teases the unannounced D4S

Nikon had a slew of announcements at the CES 2014 – first and foremost, it’s the brand new D3300 DSLR, but also the company revealed it would show their yet unannounced D4S DSLR in Las Vegas.

Along with the D3300, Nikon also announced its new collapsible 18-55 VR kit lens and the full-frame version (FX) of the 35mm 1.8G lens, which has so far been available only for APS-C Nikon cameras. Read more »

Fuji S1 is the first ever weather resistant bridge camera

Fuji announced the S1: the first weather resistant bridge camera. It offers a 50x optical zoom lens, full HD video recording, built-in Wi-Fi, and a dust and water-resistant body.

The camera boasts 70 different areas that are weather-sealed and the optical zoom is the equivalent of 24-1200mm (when breaking it down in 35mm camera terms). It has a 16.4MP backlit CMOS sensor It’s aperture range is f/2.8-5.6. Read more »

Canon introduces PowerShot N100, SX600HS and ELPH 340HS compact cameras

Canon’s press event at CES today saw the unveiling of three new point and shoot cameras. The company introduced the PowerShot N100, SX600HS and ELPH 340HS to extend its mid-range offerings.

Samsung launches NX30 smart camera with swivel Super AMOLED display

Samsung has launched its latest NX30 interchangeable lens camera alongside its first ever “S” series lens.

The NX30 features a 20.3MP APS-C sensor capable of shooting at up to 5472 x 3648 pixels resolution, a tiltable electronic viewfinder of XGA resolution, and a 3-inch Super AMOLED swivel and touch display for looking at what you’re shooting from all angles. Read more »

Sony QX lens-style cameras updated with 1080p video recording

This year at IFA Sony unveiled the unique QX line of lens-style cameras and they’re getting their first update. As you may remember they had some issues – for one they could shoot video at 1,440 x 1,080 but not widescreen. The firmware update fixes that and adds proper 1,920 x 1,080p video recording mode.

Canon announces EOS M2 mirrorless camera

Canon has officially taken wraps of its second generation mirrorless interchangeable lens camera dubbed EOS M2. The successor of the EOS M is said to have an auto-focus speed that is 2.3 times faster than the previous edition.

The newest Hybrid CMOS AF II system in the camera improves the focusing speed by expanding the focus window by about 80% of the viewfinder, which is about double the size from the EOS M. Read more »

Nokia France has released a pretty funny video commercial about the Lumia 1020 monstrous cameraphone in France.

Nikon Df is a modern full frame DSLR in a classic body

Nikon has announced a new member of their high-end FX format DSLRs. The Nikon Df straddles the line between a classic Nikon camera designed around the lines of the old Nikon ‘F’ series of 35mm film cameras and a modern day DSLR.

On the outside, the Df is all retro. The body is made out of magnesium alloy and leather. On the top sits a roof mounted pentaprism with a hotshoe. The camera comes with a smattering of mechanical dials to adjust everything, from ISO to exposure compensation, release mode and exposure mode and a body mounted shutter button with threaded release port. First Nokia Refocus samples are interactive, impressive

Nokia is doing some very interesting things for mobile photography and I don’t just mean the PureView hardware – software like the recent Refocus app creates impressive results. You know how you can zoom in and reframe photos on the Lumia 1020 after the fact? Nokia Refocus lets you do that with focus.

Nikon announces D5300, company’s first DSLR with built-in Wi-Fi

Nikon has announced the D5300, a new mid-range model in the company’s DSLR range. It has a 24.2 megapixel CMOS sensor that covers an ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable up to 25600) and is powered by the new EXPEED 4 image processor. The D5300 doesn’t have an optical low pass filter, which improves image sharpness and detail at the expense of anti-aliasing.

Other features include a 39-point auto-focus system, Scene Recognition System, 1080p60 video recording, 5 fps burst mode and a 3.2-inch articulating LCD. Read more »

Sony announces new A7, A7R and RX10 cameras

Sony has announced three new cameras, two of which are particularly exciting. Those are the A7 and A7R that have been doing the rounds of the internet the past few days in the form of leaked images. The third is the RX10, which is essentially the RX100 II with high-zoom lens.

The A7 and A7R are the world’s first compact full frame mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. The only difference between the two is in the sensor used. Read more »

Nikon announces D610 full-frame DSLR

Last year Nikon launched the D600, a full-frame DSLR with a pricetag that didn’t require you to sell your kids to be able to afford it. Now, they have launched the new D610, that features some minor improvements over its predecessor.

One of the new features is a quiet, continuous shutter mode, that allows photographers to shoot discreetly at 3fps in burst mode. Nikon has also improved the white balance on the D610 over its predecessor and it now captures more natural colors than before. Lastly, the speed and performance has also been improved and the D610 is now faster, allowing it to capture at around 6fps in burst mode. Read more »

Shootout teaser: 6 best smartphone cameras go head to head

The moons have aligned in our favor – or rather in favor of a massive shootout between the six best mobile phone cameras on the market. We have the resolution champs – Nokia Lumia 1020 and Sony Xperia Z1, the 13MP shooters – LG G2 and Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the Apple iPhone 5s and the HTC One.

GoPro unveils Hero3+ Black and Silver editions: smaller, better, same price

It’s been nearly a year since the Hero3 was announced and now GoPro has a refinement – the GoPro Hero3+. It’s available in both Silver and Black editions (the White wasn’t updated) and promises 15-20% smaller camera (when put in the waterproof housing), improved lens and 30% longer battery life plus new features.

The better spec’d model, dubbed Hero3+ Black is 20% smaller than the non-plus version, but it also has a better lens – 33% sharper and promises to cut the imaging artifacts in half – along with upgrading the microphones. Read more »

Nikon announces AW1 mirrorless camera, the world’s first waterproof shooter with interchangeable lenses

Nikon has officially unveiled the world’s first waterproof camera with an interchangeable lenses, the AW1. The mirrorless camera is complimented with two new waterproof, shockproof and freeze proof lenses – the Nikkor AW 11-27.5mm and the Nikkor AW 10mm f/2.8.

The 11-27.5mm lens is the more versatile option with its 2.5x zoom range, while the wide angle 10mm lens due to its wider aperture offers shallow depth of field and higher shutter speeds in low-lighting conditions. Read more »
