AMD just unveiled its second generation lineup of APUs. The replacement for the current Llano series Accelerated Processing Units is aimed at people seeking budget PCs and notebooks, which bears the name Trinity and boasts better efficiency and speed.

Apple has announced its financial results for the fiscal second quarter of 2012 that ended in March 31, 2012. Their total revenue for this quarter was $39.2 billion and the quarterly net profit was $11.6 billion. In comparison, the figures were $24.7 billion and $6.0 billion respectively for the same quarter last year.

As usual, the iPhone did very well this quarter, with Apple selling 35.1 million of those, up by 88 percent compared to year-ago quarter. Sales were down compared to the first quarter, however, where Apple managed to sell 37.04 million iPhones, the reason for this being chalked down to the holiday season that boosted the sales in the previous quarter. We are about six months away from seeing the first Windows 8 tablets and personal computers hit the shelves now. Sources close to the matter were quoted by Bloomberg as saying that the next edition of the Windows 8 platform development will be complete by this summer and the first devices carrying it will hit the market in October.

Microsoft’s goal is to ship the x86 and the ARM versions of Windows 8 simultaneously and the company already confirmed there will be devices running both at launch day. Read more »

Raspberry Pi is an extra cheap ($25-$35) bare-bones computer that is nevertheless very capable – it runs Quake III, for example. One of the Raspberry Pi project leaders claims the little computer has quite a bit of graphical processing oomph under the bonnet too.

He’s been quoted that the Pi has more than twice the graphics prowess of an iPhone 4S. And besides doubling as a simple gaming console, Pi can also decode videos up to 1080p thanks to the built-in video hardware acceleration. Read more »

The Kinect controller for Windows has just become available. It is compatible with all Windows 7 and Windows 8 PCs with a 2.66GHz dual-core or faster CPU and at least 2GB RAM.

Intel has just unveiled seven new members of its Sandy Bridge family of CPUs. We got three quad-core desktop processors of the Core i5 variety and four Celeron CPUs meant for use in mobile devices.

The first and most powerful of the new processors is Core i5-2550K, which is an unlocked-multiplier CPU with a stock clock speed of 100MHz higher than the i5-2500K. The i5-2550K runs at 3.4GHz, with frequencies of up to 3.8GHz possible with the Turbo boost. Read more »

The words ‘affordable’ and ‘Alienware’ don’t usually go together but with the new Alienware X51, Dell intends to change that. It is the smallest Alienware desktop gaming system so far and also the cheapest. But despite the starting price of ‘just’ $699, the new Alienware X51 packs in decent hardware.
