You are free to hold your phone any way you like, says Nokia

by 300 comments

As official Nokia blog cheekily points out, there are many way of holding your Nokia device. And none of those is right or wrong. Sarcastically clever!

These handholds are not as creative as I would have liked, but nevertheless I had a good laugh reading their semi-serious article.

Nokia N8 UI appears in a video demo and it looks good

by 76 comments

Reviews of Nokia N8 are spawning all over the place as if Nokia has lifted some sort of an embargo on the N8 public appearances. We just stumbled upon a pretty nice video that offers a rare sight – the Nokia N8 Symbian ^3 UI in action, including some pinch zooming and some gaming action (the office favorite, Angry birds). Plus both – you can pinch zoom in Angry birds, too. How’s that for cool?

Update: In some quite related news, we just got that Doug Dawson, a Nokia spokesman, has confirmed for Reuters that the Nokia N8 will be the last N-series device to run Symbian OS of any kind. From now on, N-series flagships will only use MeeGo. But that doesn’t mean Nokia will drop Symbian. The company will still use it for the rest of its touch smartphones, such as the X-series and even the C-series. The rest of the smartphones will use the regular non-touch variety of Symbian S60.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 pays us a visit, we shoot it on video

by 15 comments

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 has only recently been announced. It sits somewhere between the X10 mini and the original X10 both size and feature-wise. It’s cute, that’s for sure and it seems like a perfect mix of the two X10′s. It’s still compact and easy to handle, but visually it looks more able-bodied than the diminutive X10 mini.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8

For the XPERIA X8 Sony Ericsson has used the same single-widget-per-single-page homescreen layout that we saw on the X10 mini. They’ve gone for that since X8 has a relatively smallish screen. I think 3-inches is as low as Android smartphones with HVGA resoution have gone down. Read more »

First demo of MeeGo for Handhelds to be launched in a week

by 15 comments

A pre-Alpha version of MeeGo Handheld is expected to show up in only a week’s time – on 30 June, according to Valtteri Halla, director of MeeGo software at Nokia. The full Handheld release of the Maemo reincarnation is slated for October release, but this early pre-release will include images of the user interface (perhaps mockupslike these) and an SDK for developers.

Meego UI

Valtteri Halla is also promising the first MeeGo handset to ship in the second half of 2010 – obviously a successor of Nokia N900.

It would be interesting to see whether the handset version will look anything close to the tablet version demoed here.

Nokia finally serves the third demo video of N8 – it’s music player and HDMI TV-out in focus

by 211 comments

Nokia are currently doing a series of videos on the upcoming N8 and today they published the third and last one. Unfortunately, much like the second video we saw, it’s not what we’d call overexciting. They’ve somehow lost the momentum of the first clip.

But let’s not waste any more time. Head for the video to see how fluid is the N8 Album art video three and a half years after the announcement of the first iPhone, which pioneered it. Oh, and in case you didn’t know, you need an HDMI adapter to use a regular sized HDMI cable with your N8. Enjoy the show! Read more »

Coke and Mentos-powered car goes from 0 to ultra-cool in 3.5, video inside

by 568 comments

What do you get when you mix 108 two-liter bottles of Coke Zero with 648 Mentos candies. A rocket bike, for one thing. Plus a serious mess to clean off the floor, for another.

I bet you’ll enjoy watching this one on video. I know I did. Read more »

We won’t see a Moorestown tablet like this one at least another six months

by 25 comments

Tablets are a hot commodity these days and it seems almost every company has a prototype on display at this year’s Computex. Unfortunately, there are only few tablets available on the market despite the huge demand. It’s like all hardware companies either totally missed this wave of touchscreen tablet love or manufacturers simply lack the optimized OS needed for creating a compelling tablet computer.

Whatever may be the case, the Intel’s Moorestown platform currently seems as one of the most promising upcoming tablet solutions. The Quanta Redvale tablet shown off by Intel at Computex is a living proof.

Foosball fever by Nokia, now that’s a cool video ad

by 1,400 comments

It’s rare that I come upon a seriously impressive video ad such as this one. I won’t waste your time trying to recap, I’ll just say those are some wicked foosball tricks.

Oh, I also think I saw a Nokia N8 parading around at some point, but I’m not really sure. I’m too busy learning the new moves.

Samsung I9000 Galaxy S stars in another demo video, this time it’s about telephony

by 254 comments

When it comes to contacts management and telephony the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S has got several nifty features up its sleeve. We can hardly find any compromises Samsung has made in that department. But you should know that if you’ve read our recent review.

We decided to get more graphical so you can see more easily how well everything works. We shot a new demo video of the Samsung Galaxy S concentrating mainly on contacts management and telephony features.

Firefox Home will soon bring your desktop Firefox stuff to your iPhone, iPad

by 632 comments

No, Firefox web browser is not likely to appear as a native iPhone application anytime soon. But Mozilla are already working on a native iPhone app that syncs your browsing history, bookmarks, and opened tabs. Meet the Firefox Home for iPhone.

Firefox

I’ve been using various workarounds to sync my currently opened tabs with my iPhone. I’ve tried saving those pages to ReadItLater. I’ve also tried bookmarking the webpages and later on accessing those through the Xmarks website – the service I use for bookmark syncing. But none of these are as convenient as the upcoming Firefox Home.

Strapping the iPad – it only takes a dab of ingenuity and some Velcro

by 174 comments

It seems good old Velcro had quite a bit more uses than I thought. Including fastening your iPad to the wall, ceiling, or window, not to mention your car’s dashboard and your motorbike’s tank. But even if you don’t care the about the iPad, that’s an impressively filmed video in its own right, so it’s really enjoyable to watch.

Steve Jobs on the 6 grudges Apple holds against Flash

by 1,156 comments

“Flash is the number one reason Macs crash.”, Jobs says, “We don’t want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash.” You bet they don’t.

Apple like to have things under control – especially user experience. But there’s more to that and Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, thought the issue is important enough to deserve a full press release that explains 6 reasonable sounding points in favor of their decision.

It’s an interesting read – and definitely one that’s been written by a true essay master, so I bet you guys would love to have a look at it in detail. BTW, it’s really strange of him publishing this semi-official/semi-personal statement on Flash, while still avoiding the more topical issue of the lost iPhone prototype and the events that followed. Anyway, check out the stuff yourselves.

Apple iPad, we finally got it! What do you want to know?

by 69 comments

The iPad is definitely not as hot as it used to be in the beginning of the month, but hey, getting one in good ol’ Europe was a hard enough task let alone sneaking it under the siege of an erupting volcano with a name only a mother could say right.

Anyway, now that we have it, you can bet we’ll be reviewing the iPhone’s big brother here in our blog. But only after we’re done playing with this new toy.

So far one thing’s for sure – it’s fast. The Apple’s iPad is Read more »
