For me the transformer is the perfect machine. I do a lot of travelling, airports, airplanes etc.

Consideration 1: Weight: Transformer lighter than a netbook.

Consideration 2: Battery Life. 10 Hours will probably cover most journeys but throw in a delay and having another 6 hours charge available could be a life saver.

Consideration 3: Portability. When flying, watching a film on a laptop is difficult, takes up too much space, tablet is a much better form factor for viewing films.

Consideration 4: Blogging, Photos etc at destination. For this the more connectivity the better. SD Card slot for transferring photos from cameras. Keyboard for typing up a blog. HDMI to connect to hotel tv for watching videos.

A laptop/netbook on its own or a standalone tablet just doesn't fulfill those needs. The transformer does and i'm sure quite a few tablet buyers have similar needs.

I do agree Flyer is not competitive at all, but not being able to use a tablet as a notepad is simply making it a toy. It's that simple - if I carry a tablet I don't want to be carrying a plain notepad too (even less a bag, full of accessories and cable adapters). If I'd have to carry a keyboard, bunch of cables, notepad and 700+ grams of glass&metal - forget it, I'd just get a lenovo U160 with i5 cpu for example.

It's true you can get a pen for any capacitive screen, but you'd need the software support for it. For example:
- writing down on the screen shouldn't interfere with your hand, touching it at the same time.
- writing over any app and record the complete picture (preferably as layered object, easy to split later).
- document editor, that allows you to insert any object (being foto, handwritten element, sound recording, video, etc.) simple as click.

If that's available then I can use the tablet at home, at work, at university, anywhere basically ...

Don't hurry up with the transformer - it's a way to bulky and heavy to be comfortable for mobile usage. That's my 2c - try it first as your mileage may vary.

Luke are you kidding?

The HTC flyer is the dud of the bunch. Only Android tablet not running 1280x800, Not running Honeycomb, 7 inch screen and a £600 asking price? You can get a pen for most tablets if you really want to.

Transformer wins in the battle of the android tablets for me hands down and i'll be putting my money where my mouth is. Flyer way too expensive, Xoom same as Transformer but more money, Acer A500 cheap but low specs. Maybe Samsung and LG tabs will be healthy competition but until we know prices, release dates theres no point including them.

There is no point comparing with the ipad/ipad 2 sales at the moment. Apple has a lot of very faithful followers with money to burn on whatever Cupertino release no matter how good an alternative is.

I think the same way - only the HTC Flyer stands up among those toys with its pen support (in apps & os), but then again it has badly outdated hardware, OS and unrealistic price tag.

@Anant
Might use that once or twice, but honestly don't see a real market share for such addons. Buying a weak tablet with a limited mobile OS and then transform it to a netbook is not smth very useful IMHO.
