I am sure Nexus series are not "Large number of devices".Google sells one Nexus before Nexus 4 and now two maybe ? counting only phones.

Apple sells 3 iPhones which are 4 , 4S and 5 (4 is selling from 2 years and 4S from one year)

iPhone sells on 80+ countries , isn't that quite big number compared to nexus ?
And recently Apple rolled out update for 3GS , 4 and 4S , aside from iPhone 5 where iOS 6 comes right out of box.

Not to forget that iPhone works with different configurations with different carriers.iPhone 4 doesn't support dual antenna like 4S or 5 , which means CDMA is separate from GSM.

Android is not freeware , modifications have limit , if u cross them , Play store is not accessible and it would be called "forked android".

Galaxy Nexus on Verizon got update very late , right ? how come google can't even handle "one phone" they sell and that too in their home country ? its sad how google gives control entirely to Verizon.

Need not be. This year saw 5 Nexus devices, owing to the fact the it's Google's 5th Anniversary.
But you are correct. Google should release an ultimate Nexus device. And focus on that. For at least one and a half year.
