Then the 680 came out, and it trounced the 7970 in nearly every benchmark, both synthetic and real-world.

What happened then is that AMD dropped the prices on their current stock, then came up with new, factory-overclocked versions of their cards. To put it in perspective, it’s like a hand of poker where AMD got a straight flush, then nVidia got a full house, so AMD threw its hand away and searched the deck until it could find a royal flush. Get it?
